Our History and Vision
When Environmental Educators, Brian Heubel and Karen Garfinkle, first came to visit Dharamshala, India, it was to attend teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Soon, they came to understand the serious need for support for struggling exiled Tibetan individuals, as well as the pressing need for environmental awareness and health programs for Tibetan refugees living in India. It began when the local Tibetan government welfare office asked them to teach to two classes of 30 newly arrived refugees from Tibet about environmental health hazards, recycling and the dangers of modern toxic products. They were subsequently asked to train Tibetan teachers, government leaders, health care workers, students, as well as local Indians and visiting tourists in the Dharamshala area.
Each of our courses & projects have arisen from direct requests from local Tibetan & Indian governmental and educational organizations. Similarly, our Emergency Fund arose from direct requests for help from individuals, families and schools.
Today, Solutions in Action is a 501(c)3 non-profit international, education and service organization, dedicated to grassroots compassionate action for endangered peoples and environments. Our efforts have been a result of the dedication of a core group of environmental educators, kindhearted volunteers and international Tibet supporters.
Our Philosophy
In essence, we work to share a positive outlook on the world's future. Our goal is to inspire hope and peace while empowering individuals to compassionate action. We find that people help others in need, when they are made aware of injustice while being given practical means to help. Solutions in Action creates educational environments and service projects based on this philosophy.
Community Service in Dharamshala
From 1995-2007, we offered environment, education & service projects in Dharamshala, India, exiled home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. These programs have developed as a result of direct request from and in cooperation with departments of the Central Tibetan Administration, schools and individuals in need.
Environmental Health Education in Exile
Since 1995, we designed courses, curriculum & teacher training in environmental health education, reaching thousands of Tibetans, Indian residents & international visitors in Dharamshala, India and other Tibetan settlements.
In 2000, we offered a two-month environmental health education & consultation project in the Tibetan Doeguyling settlement in Mundgod, South India. Programs such as these, empowered individuals to make wise and practical choices for a healthier and cleaner environment for their communities and future generations.
Tibet Awareness Raising in the USA
In the United States, we aim to educate the public about the plight of Tibet and other endangered peoples and the environments upon which they depend. We are deeply moved by Tibet's powerful example of non-violence and compassion.
